A null model for explain crustacean zooplankton species associations in central and southern patagonian in land waters OceanDocs

Estimating the Value of Invasive Aquatic Plant Control: A Bioeconomic Analysis of 13 Public Lakes in Florida AgEcon
Adams, Damian C.; Lee, Donna J..
We present a bioeconomic model of three invasive aquatic plants (hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce) in 13 large Florida lakes, and simulate one-year and steady-state impacts of three control scenarios. We estimate that the steady-state annual net benefit of invasive plant control is $59.95 million. A one-year increase in control yields steady-state gains of $6.55 million per year, and a one-year lapse causes steady-state annual losses of $18.71 million. This model shows that increased control of hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce is optimal.

Evaluation of current and future water resources development in the Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia AgEcon
McCartney, Matthew P.; Alemayehu, Tadesse; Shiferaw, Abeyu; Awulachew, Seleshi Bekele.
Lake Tana, located in the headwaters of the Blue Nile, is valuable for many people including the communities who live around the lakeshore and those who live immediately downstream. The area has been identified as a region for hydropower and irrigation development, vital for economic growth in Ethiopia. A multidisciplinary study was conducted to assess the possible impacts of this development. This study found that current development has benefited some local people but adversely affected others. Future development will exacerbate pressure on the lake. Hard choices must be made about how the water is best utilized. It is important that all stakeholders, including local people, are involved in the decision-making process.

Finding patterns of distribution for freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish, by means of parsimony analysis of endemicity RChHN
OYANEDEL,J. PABLO; VEGA-RETTER,CAREN; SCOTT,SERGIO; HINOJOSA,LUIS FELIPE; RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO.
During the last decades, limnological studies on Chilean systems have contributed to know the species composition and main environmental variables of many water bodies distributed over a wide latitudinal interval, from 18º to 53º S. However, we still lack of a comprehensive view about the structure and functioning of regional freshwaters. In this work we review the available information about pelagic biota from Chilean basins, in order to reveal patterns of species distribution and their possible association with environmental variables. We built presence-absence matrices for phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish over lakes and basins. From this database, we performed parsimony analysis of endemicity as a tool for determining fundamental distribution...

Impact of artificial destratification on water availability of reservoirs in the Brazilian semiarid Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIMA NETO,IRAN E..
Abstract: Field surveys and integral modelling were carried out to study the effect of bubble plumes on the flow hydrodynamics and the time-evolution of water temperature profiles in a shallow lake with maximum depth of about 4 m. Then, model simulations were performed to verify the feasibility of destratification of ten water-supply reservoirs with capacities of 10-2,000 hm3. Finally, hydrological modelling was conducted to assess the impact of destratification on evaporation suppression and its effects on reservoir yield. The results indicate that net temperature reductions of the order of 1.0°C can be obtained, which corresponds to evaporation suppressions of approximately 10%. In turn, this resulted in increases in the regulated flow of 2-12% that...

Mercury and organic carbon distribution in six lakes from the North of Rio de Janeiro State BABT
Sousa,Wanderson Primo de; Carvalho,Carlos Eduardo Veiga de; Carvalho,Claudia Calasans Veiga de; Suzuki,Marina Satika.
The objectives of the study was to evaluate the mercury contamination in sediments of six lagoons located in the north region of Rio de Janeiro State, trying to relate the Hg concentrations with factors that could influence it's mobility, such as organic carbon. The highest values observed in the superficial sediments in lakes like Campelo (349,6 µg.kg -1) suggested a recent Hg input into the system. The correlation Hg/Organic carbon was positive for most areas, indicating that the organic carbon was a significant parameter for Hg retention in this region. The obtained results suggested that the mercury used as fungicide in agriculture lands and in gold mining areas in the past were probably responsible for the contamination of this environment.

Morphology and morphometry of upland lakes over lateritic crust, Serra dos Carajás, southeastern Amazon region Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,MARCIO S. DA; GUIMARÃES,JOSÉ T.F.; SOUZA FILHO,PEDRO W.M.; NASCIMENTO JÚNIOR,WILSON; SAHOO,PRAFULLA K.; COSTA,FRANCISCO R. DA; SILVA JÚNIOR,RENATO O.; RODRIGUES,TARCÍSIO M.; COSTA,MARLENE F. DA.
ABSTRACT High-resolution satellite images, digital elevation models, bathymetric and sedimentological surveys coupled with statistical analysis were used to understand the physical environment and discuss their influence on water quality of the five upland lakes of Serra Sul dos Carajás, southeast Amazonia. The lakes have mid-altitude ranges (elevation), very small (catchment) and shallow to very shallow (central basins). Based on the length, area and volume, Violão and TI (Três Irmãs)-3 lakes may present large vertical movements of the water due to wind action and weakly stratified waters. Trophic conditions based on depth and shore development (Ld) parameters must be used with caution, since Amendoim Lake is relatively deep, but it is oligotrophic to...

Agricultural watersheds are affected by changes in climate, land use, agricultural practices, and human demand for energy, food, and water resources. In this context, we analyzed the agricultural, urbanizing Yahara watershed (size: 1345 km², population: 372,000) to assess its responses to multiple changing drivers. We measured recent trends in land use/cover and water quality of the watershed, spatial patterns of 10 ecosystem services, and spatial patterns and nestedness of governance. We developed scenarios for the future of the Yahara watershed by integrating trends and events from the global scenarios literature, perspectives of stakeholders, and models of biophysical drivers and ecosystem services. Four qualitative scenarios were created to...

Recent ecological changes in of Lake Sare, western Kenya OceanDocs
Gichuki, J.; Maithya, J.; Masai, D. M..
Studies on the ecology of Lake Sare (Kenya) were carried out to provide baseline information on the ecological conditions before a major wetland reclamation project was started upstream of the lake. Results indicated that maximum depth had decreased by 0.9 m while Secchi depth readings had decreased by 0.1 m compared to historical values. This implies that the lake was undergoing siltation. pH values had increased from 6.80 to 7.58 reflecting increased primary production. Conductivity had increased from 106 – 137 2 ~kS/cm. NO3- N and PO4-P had significantly increased from 0.8~kg N l-1 and 0.14 ~kg P l-1 to 23.90.8~kg N l-1 and 34.80.8~kg P l-1 respectively while chlorophyll a values reached 34.8 ~kgl-1. Water transparency is one of the main indicators of seasonal changes from the water level in lacustrine systems, but other environmental spatial and temporal variables can act jointly on water transparency. The diagnosis of interactions among physical-chemical variables and water transparency can be made by fitting statistical models based on multiple regression analysis. The objective of this study is to evaluate the set of limnologic variables that best predict the seasonal variation in water transparency in lakes of the western Amazon. These data were collected in both the drought and flood seasons in 78 lakes of the Mamirauá Reserve for Sustainable Development (RDSM). The delineation of the sampling followed the choice of variables, the analysis of...

Revealing the adaptive responses of ecological, social, and economic systems to a transforming biosphere is crucial for understanding system resilience and preventing collapse. However, testing the theory that underpins complex adaptive system organization (e.g., panarchy theory) is challenging. We used multivariate time series modeling to identify scale-specific system organization and, by extension, apparent resilience mechanisms. We used a 20-year time series of invertebrates and phytoplankton from 26 Swedish lakes to test the proposition that a few key-structuring environmental variables at specific scales create discontinuities in community dynamics. Cross-scale structure was manifested in two independent species groups within both communities across...

The lower Krishna Basin trajectory: relationships between basin development and downstream environmental degradation AgEcon
Venot, Jean-Philippe; Sharma, Bharat R.; Rao, Kamineni V.G.K..
Basin water development and rural dynamics in the Krishna Basin have led to a degradation of downstream ecosystems manifesting itself by salinizing soil and groundwater, increasing pollution, disappearing mangroves and desiccating wetlands. Reversing this evolution requires the formal recognition of the environment as a water user in its own right and the implementation of an environmental water provision. This provision should be based on a two-tier allocation system with assured discharges in the irrigation canals of the delta and to the ocean. This will lead to further commitment of water resources but this is needed to reconcile the social, economic and environmental objectives of a sustainable development. Other measures facilitating integrated...

The role of the Yala swamp lakes in conservation of Lake Victoria region haplochromine cichlids: evidence from molecular genetic and trophic ecology studies OceanDocs
Abila, R.; Salzburger, W.; Ndonga, M.F.; Owiti, D.O.; Barluenga, M..
Lake Kanyaboli (Kenya), a satellite lake of Lake Victoria, has been suggested as a potential refugium for haplochromine cichlids that have gone extinct in Lake Victoria. We employed mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite DNA molecular markers as well as feeding ecology studies to re- evaluate the evolutionary and ecological significance of Lake Kanyaboli haplochromines. The mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers revealed high genetic diversity in the endangered Xystichromis phytophagus and also the presence of mtDNA haplotypes that may have either gone extinct in Lake Victoria or have arisen in situ. Lake Kanyaboli thus acts as a ‘genetic reservoir’ for the Lake Victoria species flock. Gut content analysis revealed six trophic groups among the six...

Using White Star (Nymphoides humboldtiana) for lake landscaping Horticultura Brasileira
Tedesco,Carla D; Petry,Claudia; Bortoluzzi,Edson C; Castamann,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT White Star (Nymphoides humboldtiana), an aquatic-environmental native species of Brazilian flora, was selected in order to be used as ornamental plant in lakes. White Star plants were submitted to two water levels (high water level, up to 30 cm water depth and, low water level until substrate saturation) and two light intensities (full sun and 50% shading) to evaluate vegetative and flowering development. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a subplot scheme, being the water level the main plot and luminosity the subplot. Seven replicates were performed, and the sample unit consisted of one plant. Data related to number of leaves and flowers, length and diameter of petioles and leaf area were submitted to analyze of variance and...

The lakes in the northern highlands of Wisconsin, USA, the lakes and wetlands of Kristianstads Vattenrike in southern Sweden, and the Everglades of Florida, USA, provide cases that can be used to compare the linkages between ecological resilience and social dynamics. The erosion of ecological resilience in aquatic and wetland ecosystems is often a result of past management actions and is manifest as a real or perceived ecological crisis. Learning is a key ingredient in response to the loss of ecological resilience. Learning is facilitated through networks that operate in distinct arenas and are structured for dialogue, synthesis, and imaginative solutions to chart alternative futures. The networks also help counter maladaptive processes such as information...
